Jake shares that he can hear his mother having sex with her fiancé, Herb; this revelation brings up a repressed memory for Charlie. This leads to Charlie seeking help from Rose and Alan having a very awkward conversation with Herb and Judith.
Plot[]
Charlie, Alan and Jake are having dinner with Berta in the kitchen. Much to Charlie and Berta’s amusement, Jake asks Alan if you have to be smart to have sex, because he overhears Judith give Herb instructions during lovemaking. Alan answers with the help of a pie metaphor you don’t have to be, while also critiquing Judith’s narrow mindedness in the bedroom.
When Alan is at Judith’s to bring over Jake, he confronts Judith with the news of her vocal sex acts. Judith is embarrassed, but lets him know she’ll take care of it. Back home, Alan confesses Charlie it was one of the most awkward conversations he ever had, and Charlie mocks Alan about other embarrassing moments he had growing up.
The next morning, Charlie comes downstairs when Evelyn is giving Hiroshi Goto, a rich client, a house tour. When Hiroshi leaves for the deck, Evelyn explains Charlie she has nothing for sale at the moment, but wants to string Hiroshi along by showing him his house as a bait-and-switch. When Alan joins Evelyn and Charlie in the kitchen, they tell her what’s going with Jake. Evelyn reassures Alan it’s not that bad, and remarks to Charlie he should know what it’s like. Charlie doesn’t understand however.
That night, Charlie suddenly wakes up and remembers what Evelyn was referring to. He goes to Alan’s room and explains Alan the traumatic experience he had when he was eight: he caught Evelyn in bed with a big-red-moustached man. At Judith’s, Jake is overhearing his mother and Herb again, and bangs on the wall for them to stop. He eats a piece of banana cream pie, because his talk with Alan makes him associate pie with sex.
Charlie’s having a beer with Rose on his deck, when he tells her the repressed memory he has about Evelyn. Other memories are being dug up when he realises a lot of his “uncles” (and an “aunt”) were in fact Evelyn’s lovers. He decides to pay her a visit to come clean about the past.
At Evelyn’s, Charlie’s not allowed in and climbs up her bedroom window. He catches her and Hiroshi having sex, and Evelyn throws a high heel at him to make him fall down. Meanwhile, Jake and Alan are having dinner, when Jake tells Alan he found a can of whipped cream in Judith’s room. He mistakes it for her having pie in her room as well. Charlie walks in, and Alan asks if he went to Evelyn’s. Charlie, traumatised again, tells him he wilfully “can’t remember” he did.
At the end, Charlie’s watching cartoons with Jake. He almost starts to vomit when Yosemite Sam is on, as this subconsciously reminds him of the big-red-moustached man from the past.
