Rose is moving to London, and Charlie is surprised by his reaction to the news. He soon realizes he let the best woman in his life get away from him. Meanwhile, Alan's false online dating profile leads him to a woman called Beverly (Allison Janney) with a lot of bad marriages in her past.
Plot[]
Charlie comes home early from a date when he had to leave unexpectedly, after almost being caught by the lady’s husband. Alan claims he was watching porn on his laptop when Charlie stumbles upon him in the living room. In fact, he was using an online dating service, much to Charlie’s embarrassment.
The next day, Rose is helping Jake study for his test. When they’re done, Rose asks Charlie to talk privately, but he promises her he’ll call later instead.
When Alan is getting ready for a date with a woman he met online, Charlie walks in to mock his dating profile, which broadly exaggerates his qualities. Beverly, Alan’s date, arrives and Charlie has to act like he’s the poor live-in brother Alan let her believe. While in character, Charlie manages to go out with Alan’s 133 dollars he sponged off of him.
Later that evening, Charlie’s at Pavlov’s. Rose walks in, holding Charlie accountable about not calling her. She tells him she’s moving to London, because of her family’s business interest there. Charlie is sceptical and believes she wont.
Meanwhile, Alan’s having wine with Beverly on the deck. She tells him she had her heart broken eight times but still believes in love. She wants to walk out however, when she thinks Alan is gay and waisting her time. Alan comes clean and tells her he’s in fact the poor live-in brother and his job isn’t as flashy as he initially declared. She’s not mad and reassures him he “cleared it with a penis and a job”.
The next day, Jake is having breakfast with Berta. They both give Charlie a hard time about Rose leaving when he walks in. Charlie isn’t impressed, knowing all too well it’s just another lie. That evening, Beverly is on the couch with Alan and confesses him she brought her toothbrush, implying she wants to stay the night. Charlie rushes downstairs because he’s mad with Rose lying to Jake she’s moving away. He shouts on the deck for her to show up, but then rushes out to pay her a visit.
Charlie meets Rose and confesses his love for her to play along with her act, thinking that’s what she wants to hear. He kisses her, but is surprised when her taxi shows up. Rose gives their first restraining order as a framed present and leaves for the airport. Charlie realises she was telling the truth when he sees her empty house.
At the end, Beverly leaves when Charlie walks in. He remarks it’s nice for her and Alan to have found each other and shows Beverly the framed restraining order Rose gave him. Charlie wants to talk to Alan about his heartache and thinks he made a big mistake by letting Rose go. He finds Alan in his room fastened to the bed wearing a red erotic outfit. Alan comfortingly tells him we “all make mistakes”.
Charlie, as he races out to see Rose one last time.
Trivia[]
