The Sea is a Harsh Mistress is the 3rd episode of Season 4 . It aired on CBS on October 2, 2006.
Summary [ ] Charlie tries to surf to impress a young lady he just met, but after he nearly drowns, he is convinced that he saw a vision of his late father. He tells Charlie something unsettling: “Take care of your mother”.
Plot [ ] Solely to impress Dottie, a surfer girl, Charlie mounts his own board, which had been gathering dust since he moved to Malibu. He nearly drowns at the first wave, gets shark hallucinations and "instinctively" tongue-kisses a burly lifeguard, who resuscitates him mouth-to-mouth. The worst thing however, was that he saw a vision of his dead father telling him to take care of his mother Evelyn. When Charlie tells Alan what he saw, Alan doesn’t believe him at first. Charlie eventually decides to follow up his dad’s advice and calls Evelyn. He and Alan are duped into a lunch date with her the next day.
At the restaurant, when Charlie left for the restroom, Evelyn asks Alan to tell her why Charlie called her so unexpectedly. Alan admits that Charlie saw a vision of their late father, telling him he should take care of his mother. Evelyn takes advantage of the situation by telling Charlie and Alan she’s going to have surgery the next day, implying she will need to recover. Remaining faithful to the advice of his father, Charlie offers Evelyn to stay over at the beach house for awhile after surgery.
However, what was thought to be a serious medical procedure Evelyn had to undergo, was in fact a cosmetic lip augmentation. In no time, Evelyn enslaves Charlie who obeys her every command. When Charlie and Evelyn are watching an old gangster movie on TV, Charlie realises, influenced by a line in the movie they’re watching, he may be misinterpreting his father’s advice. Maybe he shouldn’t take care of his mother in a serving way, but more as he should get rid of her, i.e., kill her.
At the end, the lifeguard who saved Charlie earlier shows up and asks out Charlie for coffee. Charlie hesitates first, but accepts when Evelyn calls his name to come change her butt dressing.
